I am constantly on the lookout for inspiration. I want to be ready for whenever inspiration may strike. Most of the time I have sketchbook or notepad with me. This way I can capture and record whatever has inspired me in the moment. I have a few notebooks filled with sketches, ideas, quotes, colors, and thoughts. I believe it is very important to hold on and remember what inspires you. The best way I have found is to write it down.
Some ways I like to stir up my creativity are going for a drive, taking a walk in the woods, and going window shopping in my favorite stores. Another way I stay creative and find inspiration is by looking at other creations. Like music, movies, and visual art. Experiencing others art helps me in creating my own.
I find all of these sites inspirational. Designspiration is similar to Pinterest. It is a community posting site for artwork, graphic design, typography, and photography. You can save and post your own work. It’s specifically targeted for creative individuals. Google Arts & Culture is similar, but way more interactive. There are online galleries filled with hundreds of years’ worth of art, interactive games, and informative articles. The last website listed in the link to Magnolia, this is the collection of businesses owned by Chip and Joanna Gains. They have a home renovation show called “Fixer Upper”, and since the show have grown into many other businesses. They focus on great design and better living. They have many design shows that I watch, so I decided to link the website.
My personal style is very eclectic. It’s a mix of vintage American (1940-1970s), Mediteranea, American Southern, luxury, and fun slightly bold colors. I don’t really have just one style or aesthetic that I fit into. I have a tendence to fill my living space with warm colors, while my art is filled with cool colors. I love color, and I use a lot of it in everything. I also love the use of symbols, embellishment, trims, and patterns. I respond and enjoy graphics, so my designs have the tendency to have a lot of graphics and embellishments. I also love contrast, so I often use a lot of black and white or other pairs of contrasting colors.
There are a few styles that I really like that aren’t my personal style. One would be geometric; it isn’t a style that I would normally use but it can be very useful in design. Sometimes a geometric style can convert a message better than words. The way the shapes create a story, a picture is worth a thousand words. Other styles that I use often are masculine and feminine. My personal style isn’t really masculine or feminine, it’s a mix of both. There may be a little more of a feminine vibe sometimes, both I love elements from both. Sometimes projects need a darker, strong masculine style. Bold letters, muted colors, large shapes, to create the feeling for a design. While a light, refreshing feminine style is needed for other projects. Pastels, thin lines, florals, and patterns are needed just as much as the alternative masculine feel. Another style that I think is a good honorable mention is a cabin and woodsy style. most of the time it can be really tacky, but if used right it can be fun and warm.
